Nailed it!

Before Memes and Gifs came along, there were verbal expressions. As a lover of words I am fascinated with the introduction of a new expression that doesn’t have any real connection to the original meaning. Who decides? Why is it ever expressed in the first place? How does it become a widespread reality so quickly? Who decided once upon a time that “off the chain” meant awesome? Why would the word “sick” be used for something great? I have often wanted to do a sociological experiment and make up some kind of nonsense meaning for a word and see if I could get it to take hold.

Look at the above title. I doubt anyone will read that without having a keen understanding that the expression means that something was completed in the right way. We just intuitively know. I’m sure people from other countries that do not speak English have fits trying to use a literal translation for an accepted expression.

This morning I heard that very expression used in a news segment and for some reason I thought about the literal meaning juxtaposed with the expressive meaning and then incorporated those with the spiritual meaning and my mouth fell open. In that moment I saw a vision of large nails going through the hands/wrists and feet of Jesus. If the expression “nailed it” means to complete something or get it just right……shew.

Our Savior was secured to a cross with all of our mistakes/our sins. Think about a sinful area of your life; something that with all of your effort you try and try to overcome but never seem to hit the mark. A nail was put through Jesus for you. That sin penetrated through His flesh and He became what we did. The most sinful person that has ever lived or will ever live? Jesus the Christ. He bore what we could not bear. He took what we deserved. He chose reckless love, without a care for Himself, so we could eat the sweet fruit of being seen by the Father as beloved.

Unforgiveness? Nailed it!

Hatred? Nailed it!

Addiction? Nailed it!

Lust? Nailed it!

Self-righteousness? Nailed it!

Judgmentalism? Nailed it!

Doubt? Nailed it!

The list goes on and on and on and on. He got it right. He got us right. He continues to do so today, tomorrow, and forever. Once the nails came out and the deed was done, His body was laid to rest. And then…… And then the Glory of His resurrection and His ascent to the Father. Do we just wait around now? Oh no my friends! Jesus really nailed it when He ascended because He sent the Holy Spirit so that we would never walk alone. What exactly does that look like for us?

Need wisdom? Nailed it!

Depressed or anxious? Nailed it!

Afraid? Nailed it!

Need healing? Nailed it!

Need a friend? Nailed it!

The list goes on and on and on. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have always been together. They have always had the perfect plan and the perfect time. Nothing was missed. Nothing was left to chance. Press in to that completeness, to that perfect love and tenderness, to that growth and healing. They have always been waiting and pursuing and relentless in Their deep affections for you and me. Claim what has been bought and paid for at such a high price. It is finished. Nailed it!
